MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
Bridging the Gap for Young Adults Ages 16–25
As our community continues to evolve, Branches for the Lake has once again adapted its mission to meet an often-overlooked need — supporting local youth and young adults who are falling through the cracks.
After more than a year of research and community outreach, we discovered a significant gap in available services. While there are programs that assist children, seniors, veterans, single parents, and adults experiencing homelessness, there are very few resources available for young people between the ages of 16 and 25.
Many of these teens and young adults face tremendous challenges — some are homeless, others are unemployed or lack transportation, and many have no access to food, healthcare, or even a safe place to sleep. Too often, they’re missing the basic life skills and mentorship needed to move confidently into adulthood.
The disruptions of COVID-19 only deepened this problem, creating significant learning gaps for many local students and leaving them in need of extra academic and life-skills support. Our Mentorship Program bridges those gaps by providing personalized guidance and real-world learning opportunities to help students and young adults thrive.
Through mentorship, we connect youth with caring community members who teach practical skills such as:
- Changing a tire or checking their oil
- Applying for and maintaining a job
- Opening a bank account or applying for a loan
- Budgeting, saving, and making responsible financial choices
- Preparing meals and learning self-sufficiency
Beyond mentorship, Branches for the Lake (B4TL) is also working to provide academic support to students of all ages in the Lake area — including those in homeschool environments — ensuring that tutoring and educational resources are available to anyone in need.
We are seeking partnerships with local businesses and community members to provide scholarships and funding for students who need academic help, job preparation, or life-skill training. These mentors and tutors will be recruited from within the community, creating local job opportunities and strengthening our shared investment in the next generation.
In addition, our program addresses immediate and practical needs. We receive regular calls for help with things like:
- Purchasing a phone to maintain communication whether with employers or family members
- Repairing a car or replacing tires to get to work
- Buying work boots, tools, or uniforms
- The need for warm clothes and appropriate attire for jobs
- Finding a safe place to stay for the night
Our goal is to raise funds to meet these real, everyday needs while working toward our long-term vision of establishing a teen homeless shelter in the Lake area — a safe, stable place where young adults can rebuild their lives with dignity.
While many nonprofits focus on helping other organizations, Branches for the Lake focuses on helping the individuals who often fall outside the limits of traditional grants or aid programs.
Our name, “Branches,” truly represents our mission. Like the strong limbs of a growing tree, we continue to branch out — extending support, hope, and opportunity in every direction to help where help is needed most.
We believe in meeting people where they are, offering compassion without judgment, and giving them the tools and encouragement to grow.

Meet A.J. — A Mentorship Success Story
When a community believes, a life can change.
This year, we celebrate more than a graduation — we celebrate a transformation.
A.J. grew up facing unimaginable challenges. Left behind by his parents in seventh grade, he spent years without a stable home — couch-hopping, uncertain where he would sleep next, and wondering if anyone truly cared. What he needed wasn’t just academic help — he needed guidance, stability, and faith that his life could be different.
Through the Branches for the Lake Mentorship Program, and the generosity of caring local families, A.J’s life began to change. With encouragement, faith, and hard work, he:
- Earned his high school diploma
- Obtained his driver’s license
- Opened his first bank account
- Received much needed dental care
- Learned hands-on job and life skills
- Developed confidence, independence, and faith in God
Two incredible families involved in the program even came together to purchase a vehicle so A.J. could get to his new job at Margaritaville Lake Resort. Today, he has reliable transportation, a strong support network, and a renewed sense of purpose. His dream? To remain self-sufficient and one day help others — just as others helped him.
A.J. used to say he was “used to feeling uncomfortable.” Not anymore. He now knows what it means to be supported, valued, and truly seen.
The Branches for the Lake Mentorship Program bridges learning and life gaps — guiding young people through practical education, mentorship, and faith-based encouragement. A.J.’s story is proof that when a community comes together, transformation happens.
There are many more young people like A.J. — bright, determined, and waiting for someone to believe in them.
To the families, mentors, and donors who gave their hearts, time, and resources — thank you. You didn’t just change one life. You helped change the future.
